As areas have urbanized, the outlets for rainfall and snowmelt have changed. Where this water would have previously soaked into rich soils and fed our streams through groundwater, now primarily goes through a storm drainage system. In most communities, it eventually travels through an underground sewer process that discharges directly into local waterways such as rivers, streams, creeks and lakes.
